What is Pregnancy Reflexology?

Pregnancy reflexology is a specific type of massage and pressure therapy that targets specific points on the feet, hands and ears to correspond to different organs and glands within the body. By applying this targeted pressure, the so-called "reflex zones", we aim to stimulate the body's natural healing processes, improve circulation and deep relaxation during pregnancy.

Because pregnancy reflexology focuses on balancing the nervous system to relieve tension, it is widely used for stress and anxiety, pain management, digestive issues and hormonal and reproductive health.

Is Pregnancy Reflexology Safe?

Pregnancy reflexology is considered safe after the first trimester, provided it is performed by a qualified practitioner who has specific maternity or pregnancy reflexology training. The treatment should be adapted to your stage of pregnancy, individual needs and comfort.

If you have a high-risk pregnancy or any complications—such as placenta previa, severe hypertension or a history of pre-term labour, it is important to consult your midwife or obstetrician before having reflexology.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy and should not replace routine antenatal care or medical advice.

Pregnancy Reflexology FAQs

We have answered some of the most frequently asked questions regarding Pregnancy Reflexology. If you have any further questions, please contact us on 07902 629328, email us on stacey@willow-and-wren.co.uk or send us a WhatsApp message

Can I have Pregnancy Reflexology during the first trimester?

If you are considering reflexology during early pregnancy, particularly if you have experienced complications, discuss it with your midwife or obstetrician first.

Why should I choose a pregnancy-trained reflexologist?

Pregnancy involves significant physical and physiological changes. At Willow & Wren, we have specific maternity training and understand how to adapt positioning, pressure and treatment techniques and when treatment may not be appropriate.

Can pregnancy reflexology help with stress and anxiety?

Relaxation is one of the most common reasons people choose pregnancy reflexology. Some research suggests reflexology may help reduce perceived anxiety and promote wellbeing, although evidence remains limited. It should not replace professional support for significant anxiety or other mental health concerns.

Can reflexology help with pregnancy aches and discomfort?

Some people report feeling more relaxed or experiencing temporary relief from general discomfort, tiredness, back tension or uncomfortable feet. However, reflexology should not be presented as a treatment for medical conditions or persistent pain.

Can reflexology help swollen feet and ankles?

Gentle treatment may feel soothing when your feet are tired or uncomfortable. However, sudden or significant swelling during pregnancy should be discussed with your maternity team, particularly if accompanied by headache, visual changes, pain or feeling unwell.

Can reflexology help with sleep?

Some people find that reflexology helps them relax, which may make it easier to settle and sleep. However, evidence that reflexology directly treats pregnancy-related sleep problems is limited.

Can pregnancy reflexology induce labour?

There is not strong scientific evidence that reflexology can reliably induce or start labour. However, our Labour Preparation Reflexology treatment is designed to support your body and mind as you prepare for labour and birth. The treatment aims to promote deep relaxation, alleviate physical and emotional tension, and reduce stress and anxiety, particularly around labour and birth. Reflexology may also support the body's natural hormonal balance, which may help create favourable conditions for the natural onset of labour. While reflexology cannot guarantee when labour will begin, our Labour Preparation Reflexology treatment can be a relaxing and supportive part of preparing for birth, particularly in the final weeks of pregnancy.

Are there pressure points that should be avoided during pregnancy?

You may encounter claims online that particular areas of the feet can trigger contractions or labour, but the scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited. We never promise to induce labour through reflexology.

Can I have reflexology if I have a high-risk pregnancy?

Speak to your midwife first. Conditions such as placenta previa, significant hypertension, a history of preterm labour or other pregnancy complications may require additional medical advice before having complementary therapy.

Does reflexology replace antenatal care?

No. Reflexology is a complementary therapy and should never replace routine antenatal appointments, medical assessment, prescribed treatment or advice from your maternity team.
